The Downside of Having a Top Program

The Boy Scout program at JCUMC has grown to the point where we don't have space for 2 of our packs to meet at the church. That's ok since they are able to meet at schools where they recruit. But if they would like to have pack meetings at the church, we cannot accommodate them. We do enjoy fully open access to a great campus for the 450+ scout meetings we have annually. But growth is somewhat limited because meeting space is tapped out for some types of meetings at this time.  We also have meeting conflicts between Scout groups on occassion and limited storage for our units. But most importantly, we have an opportunity to greatly enhance and grow our program and we are not able to fully realize that growth today.

We began studying in 2006 whether we could benefit from a dedicated Scout Center on the JCUMC campus. The answer came back as a resounding "YES". We believe that a dedicated Scout Center at JCUMC would greatly benefit our existing Boy Scout program, help us support other Boy Scout units in the area, help us support District Scouting activities and help us support and grow the Girl Scout program in the area. With the acquisition of an additional 5 acres adjacent to the existing property in December 2006 for the purpose of building a dedicated sanctuary, the church's leadership voted to allocate a portion of the new property to the building of a dedicated building for scout activities.

The Scout Center, as it is now called, will be dedicated solely to scout activities and will be available to the entire scouting community to include JCUMC units, district activities, other Boy Scout unit activities and Girl Scout activities. We have conducted research to fully understand the size and type of structure that would be needed to meet the desired needs of those using the facility. A set of pre-design drawings have been completed by the architectural firm Robertson, Loia, Roof which are available for viewing. So we are still early in the process. But if we are successful in our fundraising efforts, we will be able to move quickly into the final design and construction phases of the project.
